Alternator how long charge battery

Jonathan S. Posts 4, So my understanding is: 1. Starting the engine also drains a battery. Once the engine is running, then the alternator is constantly recharging the battery. The question then is, how long does the engine have to be running in order for 3 above to more then offset 2? If more specifics are necessary, then assume Subaru Legacy with city driving. Thanks in advance for any feedback, including any corrections to my [mis?

Very general rule of thumb: figure on 30 minutes of higher-RPM highway, constant RPM driving to top up a car battery that is a bit low. If your battery is really drained, say, reading under Or a long road trip.

The alternator does charge your battery when the engine is running, and the alternator is working fine. The engine turns the serpentine belt which turns the alternator for it to generate electricity for your battery.

An alternator is best suited to produce electricity at high RPM as opposed to what it gets with the engine idling, as its power reduces to a trickle of about amps after minutes; this means you require more hours to charge the battery when idling than just taking a drive.

If a battery has a AH battery and the applied current is 10 Amperes, then the charging time will be;. To avoid being stranded with a discharged battery, always keep serving your battery.

Again, follow the safety tips while charging your battery to ensure it serves you efficiently. The alternator is connected to the crankshaft of the engine via a belt. As the belt turns, it spins a rotor, surrounded by magnets, inside the alternator. As the rotor passes the magnets it creates an AC current; which is converted to a DC current and then distributed throughout the vehicle.

Providing electricity to all of the electrical components in the car and then finally charging the battery. So you have decided to go start your car and take a little drive to get a change of scenery.

Or you have jump-started your car after it has sat too long. You may be wondering how long it will take your car battery to charge while you drive around? The general consensus is you have to drive the car at least 30 minutes to put any meaningful charge on it. This is not to say that driving for 30 minutes will fully re-charge your battery. There are several factors to consider. And 2 The overall age and condition of your car battery.

If your car battery has been sitting for some time, then driving it around for 30 minutes may not fully recharge it. But not all is lost, driving it around will put some charge on it and keep the car battery from going completely dead. I will once again cite my trip to New Jersey from Florida. It was time for it to be replaced.

Hopefully, you know understand now when a car battery is charged and how. The battery is just one component in a complex circuit. Click click click…. I think sometimes we take our car batteries for granted. They have no moving parts and remain largely unseen until something inevitably goes wrong. Then the battery becomes the focus of our attention. Our first inclination is to run….

So cables can become less effective with time, but…. I almost always put my windshield wipers up when it snowed.
